Best Food Trucks in Boston

It's the new sensation in town- Food Trucks! And no, we're not talking about a canteen truck serving up three day old donuts and peanut butter crackers. We're talking gourmet sensations at affordable prices. Ever since Mayor Menino paved the way for more permitted trucks throughout the city, the food truck craze has become a legit phenomenon.

As of last check there are eighteen trucks operating throughout boston proper, with more applications likely being filed as we speak. You can check out the schedule and location for the trucks here.

Despite the awesomeness of the new food truck movement, there are certainly some that don't quite live up to our fine take out food eating standards. And just so you don't have to endure the trials of trying each and every new food offering, we provide you with a listing of our top five favorite food trucks in Boston:

1. Clover

clover

One of the first on the Boston food truck scene, Clover offers some of the best vegetarian fare found in Boston. Even non-vegans such as myself are surprised to find out just how tasty the food can be. Sandwiches start at just $5, and for the money, you'll be hard pressed to find a better sandwich anywhere.

The Chickpea Fritter is an addiction of mine; layered with hummus, pickles, cucumbers and tahini, served up in a wholesome wheat pita. It's healthy, delicious, and all sorts of addictive. Try it with Clover's rosemary french fries and a ginger lemonade. Don't be surprised if you start wondering how any food served out of a truck can taste this good.

2. Roxy's Grilled Cheese

If you caught any of the latest "Great Food Truck Race" on the Food Network, then you're already familiar with these Boston boys. While the hometown guys didn't bring home the prize, they made a great name for all that is grilled cheese. And let's be clear- this isn't you're mom's wonder bread and land o' lakes kinda grilled cheese. Roxy's put's their own unique twist on the original-coming up with some of the finest creations known to the grilled cheese world.

Try the "Green Muenster" an amazing combination of homemade guacamole, apple-wood smoked bacon, muenster cheese (of course)-served on perfectly grilled bread. And don't forget to try some of "Grillos" spicy fried pickles- but beware, a few of these and you may just develop a Roxy's addiction.

3. Kickass Cupcakes

While some shudder at the thoughts of a $3 cupcake, I'm here to tell you those thoughts should not be applied to the treats served up by the Kickass Cupcakes crew. The cupcakes are moist, flavorful and the frosting provides a perfect amount of consistency and sweetness.

I'm a sucker for anything cookie dough, and the cookie dough cupcake here is something to marvel at. After one bite, I slowed my roll, hoping that this cupcake would never ever leave my side. Nothing complicated, just a vanilla cupcake with vanilla buttercream frosting with chocolate sauce. But buried inside, a dollop of cookie dough hits your tastebuds with a wallop. Oh yeah, that was a kickass cupcake.

4. Momogoose

momogoose food truck

Momogoose offers up all kinds of delicious asian food on the cheap. At an average of $5 per meal, it's a filling, quick fix for anyone looking for something other than Subway. Momogoose serves up traditional vietnamese fast food such as banh mi baguettes and pho, but also has some chinese american options as well.

For $5, Momogoose lets you build your own rice or noodle bowl with tofu or chicken, with flavor options such as Korean BBQ, Thai Peanut and General Gau. The amazing thing is how quickly the order comes up, and even with the super speed, the food is served hot and tastes better than something you might have ordered over in Chinatown.

5. Pennypackers

pennypackers food truck

Having launched just this past summer, Pennypackers is one of the newest entrants to the food truck scene. But don't think this new kid on the block lacks anything that some of the stodgy veterans might offer. Pennypackers' motto of creating fresh, seasonal gourmet dishes with local ingredients couldn't be any further from the truth-these food truckers do it right.

With one of the more unique and sophisticated menus amongst its fellow food trucks, Pennypackers offers up some unbelievable sandwiches. Porchetta and home made sausages are the specialty here, along with a frequently rotating menu which might include some awesome offerings such as Jamaican Jerk Chicken sandwiches or Chipotle braised chicken tacos, or a Flank Steak sandwich. Wow, i'm getting hungry.
